Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort and Lady Elliot Island Day Tours achieved ‘Advanced Eco certification’ with Ecotourism Australia in 2009 and the Resort achieved ‘Climate Action Business’ certification in 2014. The day to day operations and interpretation program of Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort meets the requirements of the Advanced Eco Tourism and Climate Action Business certification.
Ecotourism Australia was formed in 1991 as the Ecotourism Association of the Indo Pacific Region. The organization was renamed the Ecotourism Association of Australia in 1992 and the world first National Ecotourism Accreditation Program (NEAP) was launched in 1996. In 2002, the International year of Ecotourism, the organization was renamed Ecotourism Australia Limited (EA).
EA was established to promote ecotourism throughout Australia and its immediate region by creating partnerships, developing and encouraging quality ecotourism experiences and providing the industry with a clear voice. The main product development tool was the creation of certification programs that defined ecotourism and the delivery of the Annual Ecotourism Australia conference (later renamed the Global Eco Conference).
The ECO Certification program assures travellers that certified products are backed by a strong, well managed commitment to sustainable practices and provides high quality nature-based tourism experiences. The ECO Certification Program is a world first and it has been developed to address the need to identify genuine nature and ecotourism operators. Advanced Ecotourism accreditation is awarded to tourism operators with strong interpretation values, commitment to nature conservation and helping local communities.
"Ecotourism is ecologically sustainable tourism with a primary focus on experiencing natural areas that fosters environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation and conservation".
Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort is also a foundation member of <Eco Lodges of Australia> launched in October 2010. http://www.ecotourism.org.au/our-certification-programs/ecolodges-of-australia/

Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort also achieved GreenLeaders status with TripAdvisor in 2015.
The TripAdvisor GreenLeaders programme was developed so that it functions as a transparent system - one that allows anyone to learn more about any programme member's green practices. This means that, in addition to displaying a TripAdvisor GreenLeader badge on their property page, participants will also provide a full, publicly-viewable, detailed list of green practices currently in place. This ensures that travellers can see exactly which green practices they can expect at your property (eg. If your hotel recycles; types of materials that are recycled; and where these materials are recycled). The set of required green practices for GreenPartner properties will also be publicly-viewable.
