Nesting Turtle Haven

On the southernmost tip of the Great Barrier Reef lies the stunning Lady Elliot Island. A coral cay bursting with brilliantly coloured marine life, the island offers visitors the chance to relax and soak up the atmosphere, or get up close and personal with the underwater world.
Lady Elliot Island is declared "Marine National Park ZOne" and is one of the few places you will see live coral and abundant bird and marine life at every level. From turtles to dolphins and a large variety of coral, fish and giant manta rays, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Every year the island plays host to the incredible nesting ritual of the Green and Loggerhead turtles. From November through to January the turtles lumber up the same beach on which they were born more than 30 years ago.
These gentle giants nest on Lady Elliot Island up to nine times in a season, laying between 80 and 120 eggs per clutch. At the end of the nesting season, during February and March, thousands of baby turtles push through their sand nest on their way to the sea. This wonder of nature occurs only metres from Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort's beachfront balconies and can be observed at close quarters by all. Under the careful guidance of the islands' Turtle Rangers, guests of all ages can experience close encounters with these beautiful creatures when they return to their ocean paradise.
Visitors to Lady Elliot Island can now add an educational element to their visit as they learn about climate change through a series of signs placed at 11 sites around the island that provide visitors with a snapshot of ow climate change will affect the small coral cay and give tips on how to look after the Great Barrier Reef.
The island's eco resort uses low-power-light bulbs, a closed circuit anaerobic sewage waste-management system and has just unveiled a new three-phase, solar-hybrid power station to replace the diesel generators. They also collect and use rainwater and use a desalination system to purify seawater to freshwater for drinking.
Lady Elliot Island Eco resort offers a range of comfortable accommodation options, with each suite, unit, room and cabin designed to minimise impact on the island while enriching guests' experience of the seasonal wildlife.
