Power Supply

Electricity on Lady Elliot Island was previously produced by three diesel powered generators. The use of diesel generators on the island has been greatly reduced since completion of the Hybrid Solar Power Station in December 2008. To date, we have achieved a reduction of diesel use and carbon emissions of approx 70%, resulting in a drop of diesel use from 500 litres to 170 litres per day! Management has also invested in a new generator which is a third of the size of the old units, quieter and more efficient. The long term goal is to run the entire resort on solar generated power with the diesel generator as emergency backup only.

As all of the power on Lady Elliot Island is produced by solar and generator we ask our guests to conserve power by turning off the lights and when they leave their room. Fridges are turned off in all guest rooms to reduce unecessary power usage and guests can turn them on if required.

Power is supplied to all rooms at 240 Volts 50Hz and uses the 3 pin Oblique flat blades with ground (in an inverted V shape - see photo at right). This is the same voltage and plug shape used in mainland China, NZ and the following countries: American Samoa, Argentina*, Australia, China, El Salvador, Fiji, Guatemala, Kiribati, Nauru, New Zealand, Okinawa, Panama, Papua New Guinea, St. Vincent, Tajikistan, Tonga, Uruguay*. The number of available plug power points varies in each room from 2 to 6 and are only suitable for low power devices like camera or laptop battery chargers.
