Sharks and Rays are both types of cartilaginous fishes, meaning their skeleton is made of cartilage rather than bone like other fish. Sharks and rays are distinguished by the fact that the gill slits of a shark are found on the sides of the head, while the gill slits of a ray are on the underside of the head. Most commonly rays also have a flat body shape. There are approximately 340 species of sharks, ranging from 0.5m to 15m in length, and approximately 220 species of rays, ranging from 0.5m to 7m in length. |
