Black Tipped Reef Shark

Probably the most commonly sighted shark around our waters. This slender shark is easily identified by the black tips on each of its fin tips, it has been recorded up to 1.8m in length.

The Black Tipped Reef Shark belongs to Whalers (family carcharhinidae). The whaler family is one of the largest shark families, with 48 species found worldwide. Only a few of these species are found across the Great Barrier Reef. Attacks on humans by sharks are extremely rare worldwide with less than 100 attacks reported each year - in fact you are twice as likely to be struck by lightening than attacked by a shark.
