International Recognition for GBRMPA and Lady Elliot Island
GBRMPA has won international prize in the destinations category of the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards. Announced in Portugal on 13th May, the Destinations Award acknowledges the partnership between the GBRMPA and industry in protecting the Great Barrier Reef. Lady Elliot Island was put forward as an example of this partnership in action and underwent a site inspection by Professor Ralf Buckley of Griffith University. Prof Buckley is the Chair and Director of the International centre for Eco Tourism research and was commissioned by the World Travel and Tourism Council to conduct the site inspection which helped win the award.
There were 130 applications from over 40 countries in the four categories of the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards and winning represents a significant achievement for GBRMPA, and one which Lady Elliot Island is proud to have been a part of.
