Winter Wonderland - Chapter 1
To be honest, winter time is my favourite time of year on Lady Elliot Island. I like those beautiful clear, crisp winter days where everything seems so clean and precise. The flight up the coast and out to the island can be absolutely breathtaking!! Such beautiful views from the sky, where you can see the coastline from the Gold Coast to Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Island, all of Fraser Island from Double Island point and almost all the way to Lady Elliot from Hervey Bay. Then on your approach to Lady Elliot Island you can see view Lady Musgrave Island and some of the other island that make up the bunker group like they're just a stone"s skip away. All this magnificent scenery and yet the best is still to come.The highlight of your winter trip to Lady Elliot Island will no doubt be what the ocean has to offer. Sure the water and air temperature may be a bit cooler than the summer months but we have half and full length wetsuits for hire in the dive shop that will give you longer in the water. The water’s clarity and the marine life will have you astounded, a water photographers haven! Daily, we are swimming with huge schools of the big pelagic fish species that like to hang around in winter. Of course, there are the sea turtles that grace the waters around the island pretty much all year round. We are lucky to be able to see 3 out of the 7 species of turtles that inhabit the earth’s oceans on Lady Elliot. The most common being the Green turtle, the very large and majestic Loggerhead turtle and the much endangered Hawksbill turtle. Did you know that all species of turtles are now on the worlds endangered species list?
