friends of Nemo

Hi fellow snorkelers,
Here’s just a quick blab to show you guys some little friends of mine out on a bommie on the inside of the northern mooring at 2nd reef. Just off Sandy Seconds (as we like to call it). See if you can find these guys. I’ve attached a video to make it easy for you.

These guys are commonly known as Red & Black Anemone Fish(Amphiprion melanopus). No they’re not the same as Nemo (clown Anemone Fish, Amphiprion percula) but they are very closely related. Actually there are a number of different species of Anemone Fish that can be found on the Great Barrier Reef. On Lady Elliot Island I can find you at least 4 or 5 different types. My favourite being the Clark's anemonefish or the Yellowtail clownfish (Amphiprion clarkii). They’re mainly black and white in the body with a little yellow face & tail. See if you can find these in the Lagoon.

Another challenge I’ll give you when you’re snorkeling at 2nd reef is to find the Pink Anemonefish (Amphiprion perideraion ). The Pink Anemonefish is pinkish-orange with a white bar down either side of the face, and a white stripe along the back. It has a white caudal fin. See if you can spot them about half way along the outer edge. You’ll have to look hard though cause they’re down about 9m so take a big breath ?

Happy fish spotting and see you on the island!!
