More than 100 manta rays have mysteriously gathered off the shores of Lady Elliot Island on the Great Barrier Reef, exciting resort staff.
The majestic marine creatures, with wing spans of up to 7 metres, have been travelling to the small coral cay for the past month.
Manta rays, known by early seafarers as devil fish, are major drawcards for divers around the world. They are harmless and feed on krill.
“We know that Lady Elliot Island is a magnet for manta rays all year round, but what we have seen in the past few weeks has been amazing, we’ve not experienced numbers like this for many years” Lady Elliot Island Resort managing director Peter Gash said.
Over the past four weeks the resort’s dive shop team, led by Mark Atkinson, have photographed and identified100 manta rays by the unique markings on their undersides.

David Ireland, the Original Crocodile Man, will complete a one hour HD production on Lady Elliot for his Wildlife Man TV series. The film will be shown on Discovery HD Channel in the USA and Canada and numerous networks around the world, also Channel Nine here in Australia will show the film. David Ireland will be on Lady Elliot Island in Mid August 2007 for a two week shoot. The film will be edited in September and delivered to all the networks for Xmas screenings.
While on the island David Ireland will be staging his special Wildlife Man presentations and films for guests. These will include a 30 mins story about filming Bull Sharks followed by film on hand feeding bull sharks ( 50 min duration) , 30 mins story on humpback whales followed by film on humpbacks 50 min duration, 30 mins story about Solomon island and lady Elliott diving followed by film 50 min duration, 30 mins story on
