ISLAND LIFE
Critter Encounters: An early morning walk started the day for many guests who strolled the northern end, and what a sight to see with all the turtle tracks going every which way. Already hot at 7am, divers couldn’t wait to get their feet wet as they plunged into the water at Anchor Bommie and were immediately investigated by Silvertip sharks and two Manta Rays. Upon exiting the water, divers were marvelling over the wildlife and the visibility, “so clear”.
Glassbottom boaters were busy busy busy today as three full boats headed out to examine the reef. Snorkelers breathed sighs of relief as they immersed themselves in the cool water at Second Reef. And so much to see!! A “massive” Grouper that was hanging in the water, being cleaned by cleaner wrasse was sighted as soon as snorkelers hit the water. Turtles were spotted from the boat and in the water, all lazily floating around. HUGE schools of Silver Drummer, Big-Eye Trevally and Scissor Tail Fusiliers circled the boat, before heading off to the other end of Second Reef. A Blacktip Reef shark cruised around the rope, oblivious to all that was happening around it.
A midday high tide had the lagoon buzzing with snorkelers, channel one was absolutely FULL of keen snorkelers. The cool water had everybody staying in until the tide started heading back out. An afternoon Turtle Talk encouraged guests to learn all about the turtles and their behaviour and the best practices to use when observing them. As they are coming up nearly every night, they’re impossible to miss as long as you have had your afternoon nap! Afternoon divers at Second Reef were lucky enough to get two dives. Lots and lots of turtles were sighted, along with those huge schools of Trevally, Silver Drummer and Fusiliers.
Afternoon discoverers were delighted to find new little Toby all alone and posing for photos! As soon as he was approached he turned his little body around and started cocking his head on the side, and chewing on a root that pushed across in front of him. So adorable!
Now as the sun sets at a late 6:25, platters are being enjoyed on the beach with a nice bottle of champagne, snorkelers are returning, full of enthusiasm from the wildlife they have encountered and the aroma of dinner is whispering through the air. Could it get any better!
