The visibility improved again today making for rather pleasant conditions on the Glass Bottom Boat.

A ball of spangled emperor and sweetlip congregated off second reef. While those fisherman on board the glass bottom boat admitted they liked the protection offered by the green zone they also agreed that the fish looked pretty tasty. Guests were fascinated to hear the eating habits of anemones and that they actually consume fish! The guide also explained how clownfish have a special mucus coating that allows it to swim freely over the anemone without being stung and eaten. On the way back in guests were lucky to have some Manta Rays show up at the Lighthouse bommies. One of the Manta Rays was over 5 metres across making it a very big fish. Guests snapped away and got some great photos of surfacing Manta’s next to the boat and concluded a great morning in the water.

In the afternoon guests came on the Island Discovery Tour and were very interested in the cause and effects of climate change on the Great Barrier Reef. They were sad to hear that there has been a decline of seabirds as a result of altered shoaling behaviour of fish due to a change in ocean currents. They were rapt to hear about our Hybrid Solar Power Station and how we have so far reduced the resorts greenhouse emissions by 60%. They thought that it was great that a place that depends on its pristine beauty is trying to protect what it uses everyday.

The divers had a blast out at the lighthouse bommies sighting Frank the resident loggerhead turtle. Frank has a big bite mark out of his flipper from an altercation with a shark earlier in life so he is easy to recognize and he is also really friendly and came right up to socialise with divers. Guests also loved the big schools of blue-green chromis swarming through the water column shimmering in the afternoon sunshine.

It was another very nice day here at Lady Elliot with lots of discovering and relaxing happening so come out and get amongst the Reef!
