The dreaded nor’ wester reared its ugly head again today but luckily it was light and the visibility in the water remained fantastic.
The glass bottom boat was a bit bumpy but still had the great fortune to come across some feeding Manta Rays. They came gracefully past the boat like a giant magic carpet making people giddy with excitement. The other creature that had everybody melting from its cuteness was a green turtle that had popped its head up for a few breaths. In the water the reef was an amazing display of colour and activity. The six barred wrasse was a bubbly little fish today interacting with guests by coming within a few centimeters of their masks. It was a pretty cool day to be in the water.
On the island discovery tour guests were impressed with the frigate birds that were soaring over the reef flat. These amazing birds are beginning to return after their wintertime breeding migration. They were noticeably social with each other giving pursuit and swooping and weaving away. It was a great exhibit of aerial ability.
Guests on the island discovery also observed the red tailed tropic bird in flight. These birds also have remarkable skills in the air and have an iconic red streamer feather protruding from their tail. Guests laughed that although they are fantastic in flight they do not possess very good landing gears and often hit the ground with a thud.
In the evening guests came along to a dangerous marine creatures presentation in the education centre. It was a great opportunity for guests to ask questions about things that had been worrying them about the ocean. In the end it was a sensational learning experience and a few funny anecdotes put everybody at ease.
It was a super day out here on the reef so come out and get amongst it!
