ISLAND LIFE
Critter Encounters: Last night’s bingo extravaganza was a fun educating experience for young and old staff and guests alike. With cheers for Lady Elliot Island and the final bingo call of “LADY ELLIOT RULES!” had everyone laughing for most of the evening.
Divers this morning drifting from Sandy Seconds to Spiders Ledge were surrounded by sharks of all types. Black tips, White tips, Grey Reef sharks all curious to see what all those bubbles were.
The Historical walk took a relaxing stroll to the western side, learning all about Lady Elliot’s dark past of guano mining, lighthouse construction and ghosts. Upon venturing back across the airstrip, the frame of the new Solar Hybrid Power station could be viewed sitting subtly beyond the resort. The exciting new venture is definitely well underway!
Glassbottom boat goers were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a Whiptail ray feeding on the ocean floor. The ray was undulating his flexible disc flaps and using them to maneuver small crustaceans and molluscs into his mouth on the underside of his disc. What an awesome sight to see. A Grey reef shark was also caught sight of trying to swim away sneakily. Snorkelers were surrounded by green turtles at second reef, all popping to the surface for a breath then swimming away again to feed, nap, mate or hopefully prepare for a journey up the beach tonight!
Brave reefwalkers entered the lagoon at low tide amidst the heavy wind and rain to discover various creatures hiding in coral crevices. Against the waves at knee-depth, the striking red pencil slate urchin stood out just near the shoreline.
The fish pool was brimming with all shapes and sizes at fish feeding, a little difficult to see with the water moving so fast, but when the food was thrown on the surface, WHAM, what a sight to see!
Divers at Maori Wrasse this afternoon also drifted to Spiders Ledge becoming immersed in giant schools of Big-eye Trevally and colourful parrotfish.
As the afternoon dances into evening, guests are enjoying a late afternoon snorkel in the lagoon, a cocktail at the Lagoon Bar or sunset at the Coral Gardens. Take your pick!! That’s all from paradise on this beautiful Tuesday!
