ISLAND LIFE

Critter Encounters:
Because of the rough weather blowing in on the western side of the island, glass bottom/snorkel boat tours went to the southeastern section of the island.  The underwater environment here is a different world to other areas around the island.  The southeastern side is usually the windward side and waves break right onto the reef here.  This means that the corals tend to grow fairly close to the substrate, with encrusting forms dominating.  Here coral-rich ridges contrast deep barren trenches.  Snorkellers reported hordes of dazzling blue tang, large grazing parrotfish and a passing white-tip reef shark

Turtle trekkers happened to be in just the right place at the right time last night - while walking around the beach, they came upon a large female green sea turtle that had come ashore to nest!  Resort staff determined that she had just begun laying her eggs and so it was fine to approach with minimum risk of disturbing her.  Guests were awe-inspired watching the eggs drop into the nest.  The guide passed an egg around, enabling guests to feel the surprisingly rubbery texture.  This is recorded nest # 50!  And so it’s still so early in the season!  In a couple of months’ time, the island will be crawling with hatchling turtles!

Another turtle was reported attempting to nest around the western side of the island.  A resort staff member sat down on the western beach to enjoy the beautiful night sky, when she was struck by a piece of flying coral!  By coincidence, she had unknowingly sat just a few metres from a large green sea turtle excavating its nest, flinging sand and coral around it.

Special Events / Activities:

Last night’s “Movember” party was a huge success!!  Many of our male staff members have been growing their  “moes” since the start of the month.  Those who didn’t have the real thing sported fake moustaches to show their support for Movember charities.  An auction was held around the bar, with the highest bidder winning the razor to shave off .  People’s generosity was overwhelming, and throughout the night we raised a whopping $332.10!  All funds raised go towards prostate cancer research and combating male depression.
