ISLAND LIFE
Critter Encounters:
The island was alive with bird this morning with lots of the birds heading out to sea for a day of feeding; the mutton birds in full flight even before the sunshine hit the island.
The glass bottom boats were very busy today with lots of guests heading out on the boats to catch a glimpse at the creatures both above and below the surface; juvenile green sea turtles were in abundance today on the surface with many swimming on by coming up for air before descending back to the depths. A large male green turtle lay on the ocean floor having a snooze determined to stay nice and still sleeping for up to 4 hours; this was a great opportunity for all to see this creature in its natural environment. As the boat continued on its path towards Second Reef a powerful white tip reef shark swam on under the boat for all to see sending excitement through the boat with everyone getting ready to jump in for a snorkel. After seeing all these exciting creatures on the boat it was hard to imagine what could possibly be seen whilst swimming on through the water however there were lots more to be seen with big eyed trevally and silver drummers all schooling off Second Reef; the blue green chromis also stuck close to the surface of the water.
The bird watching tour headed out this morning looking for all those amazing bird species heard so frequently on the island; Toby the young red tailed tropic bird was off adventuring a little more moving away from mum ever so slightly. The bridled tern numbers have increased dramatically over the last few day with all young chick now appearing; The common noddies have also started to increase in numbers with those little white chicks now appearing at either end of the runway.
Guests were also treated to a pretty lucky sight with a female loggerhead nesting around 11am on the Lagoon beach front; the loggerhead K22000 is very familiar to the area nesting on the beach already this season also during the day.
