That's 4 Generations!
We first visited Lady Elliot Island some 30 yrs ago & have been back again & again over the years both diving on our own & later snorkelling with our children, my dear old Mum & this time our daughter & her 3 boys. It's been an absolute delight to introduce our grandsons aged 7, 5 & 3 to this incredible conservation park & underwater wonderland. Lady Elliot is truly the tiny jewel in the Great Barrier Marine Park. On day ONE of a 3 day sojourn we released 87 hatchlings, snorkelled with grazing turtles & watched in awe as giant females came ashore to nest. We marvelled at thousands of white capped noddies, precariously nested, each pair had a downy chick to feed & soaring overhead the fantastic frigate birds. The lagoon side provided a terrific start for our little snorkellers as they explored the shallows & enjoyed close encounters with the 'fish squad' waiting to be fed! Even our 3 yr old enthusiastically identified segeant majors, cucumbers, clams, sea stars, 'Nemos' & the notorious Picasso triggerfish! The Lighthouse bommies, a glass bottom boat ride & snorkels over Coral Gardens (arches & all), blew their minds! Surrounded by thousands of chromis, flashing blue & green, diving down to get a better view of the swaying wall of anemones & clown fish & spotting their first reef sharks are just some of the highlights they will cherish. Although spotted on the flight in, the mighty mantas made no appearance this time. However many hopeful visits to the channel brought other delights, well worth the waiting. The boys are on a Manta Mission so that sounds like a few more visits at least! We'll be back, it's our favourite spot & we're thrilled to see another generation enjoying the wonderful widlife experience that is Lady Elliot. In the words of 3 yr old Tallis (borrowed from the current BCF Ad) "This is living!"
